A downloadable cards

Having a feeling of safety in any TTRPG that you play in is important. Safety tools are designed with the players, their GM, and any audience in mind, to give the players the agency to check-in before, during, and after gameplay to ensure everyone is feeling supported and having fun. These tools are especially valuable when playing games that have challenging or stressful themes, and provide another way for all participants to communicate their needs in the moment.

The Safety Cards are one of the best resources that I have found for in-the-moment communication during a game. The bright red, yellow, green cards are unmistakable, following a clear stoplight system. In order to accommodate all players, we have also included cards referencing back to the TTRPG Safety Toolkit's X, N, and O cards: While these cards are still in the signature red, yellow, green, their large letters are easy to read.

This download features three different sets of safety cards, all with the bright red, yellow, green background colors:

  • The X, N, O cards
  • "Hard No," "Let's Move On," and "Yes More of This Please"
  • Emojis with a stressed face, a displeased face, and a smiling face

All cards are in a .zip file, and are saved as individual .png files. For printing at home, we suggest using card stock and the following instructions:

  • Highlight the cards you wish to print, then right click and select "Print"
  • From your Print menu, select the "3.5x5 in." option (which usually prints four images on a page) and ensure "Fit picture to frame" is unchecked
  • Ensure your printer options are set to color, rather than black and white.

The TTRPG Safety Toolkit is a resource co-curated by Kienna Shaw and Lauren Bryant-Monk. The TTRPG Safety Toolkit is a compilation of safety tools that have been designed by members of the tabletop roleplaying games community for use by players and GMs at the table. You can find it at bit.ly/ttrpgsafetytoolkit.
